# Q4 is Game 7 for Enterprise Sales

### When the year is on the line, intensity matters—but disciplined sales execution matters more.

Ask any baseball, basketball, or hockey fan about Game 7 and you will likely generate a response such as “do or die.” A player’s entire season is often enhanced or ruined depending on his/her performance in Game 7.

For enterprise software salespeople, the fourth quarter (Q4) is their version of Game 7. Everything accomplished before Q4 becomes nearly irrelevant, as reputations are made (good and bad) as a result of Q4 performance.

As companies with either a 12/31 or 1/31 year-end enter Q4, this quarter (like all the preceding ones) is the most important in company history. While seemingly hyperbolic, the numbers support its importance, for as much as 40% of the entire year’s bookings are closed during Q4 for many software companies. Deal creativity, extra executive involvement, and aggressive discounting are all in play.

When the week of Thanksgiving and the week between Christmas and New Year’s are factored into the equation, the task gets even more difficult. From a practical perspective, any deal that requires legal review by the customer needs to be approved pending legal by November 1st, as lawyers often take vacations for the final two weeks of December.

Forecast cycles shift from quarterly or monthly to weekly or daily. Due to the criticality of every Q4 deal, intensity exponentially increases.

Ironically, while the company needs a strong Q4, not every salesperson is particularly focused on closing Q4 deals. For example, if a sales rep is hopelessly falling short of making his/her sales quota, he/she may prefer to stall deals into Q1 to start the new year strong, while accepting a Q4 disappointment.

Sales leaders who ignore the possibility of sales rep “tanking” Q4 are in for a rude awakening; however, all the intensity on earth won’t compensate for a desperate sales process that focuses on attaining his/her sales quota and not the business case of the prospects.

In fact, early and often in Q4, the sales reps must stay focused on negotiating the business case based on our unique value, negotiating the business case with the decision maker, confirming the cost of not buying (doing nothing), uncovering the timing based on the financial impact of standing pat, and maintaining the discipline of ensuring we demo last.

In other words, sales reps can’t forego good sales process by focusing solely on time sensitivity. On the contrary, the first month of Q4 will likely determine which deals are truly positioned to close during Q4 versus the deals being driven solely by aggressive discounting to salvage the quarter/year.

If your team struggles to maintain sales discipline while at the same time revving up their intensity, **[COMPASS by MOIC](https://www.moicpartners.com)** can keep the salespeople on track in order to avoid being “all speed and no direction.” After all, your sales year depends on it!
